The committe planning the SSHS reunion is collecting memorabilia to display at the event. Regrettably, I lost much of such things in one of my young adult moves but I do have copies of the Bryn Mawr News because I was an editor of these newspapers with Kenneth Levin for a year. (Actually the English Teacher, Ms. Davin edited the newspaper but that's neither here nor there. I thought some of the Bryn Mawr students who went on to South Shore might like to be reminded of what they wanted to be when they grew up. Here's some of the answers from the June 1961 Bryn Mawr News section: "Time: 1971 Place: Anywhere and Everywhere - Occassion: Graduates Career:"

It doesn't look like too many of us correctly predicted our future!

I was inspired by my participation on the 1965 SSHS reunion committee and the facebook page - I Grew Up in Chicago (South Shore) that I began looking at ways to discuss the issues of people that have grown up in virtually the same time frame, not just the same neighborhood or school (though those are important factors as well). So I set up a facebook group called Thoughtful Aging. I urge you to join because the level of conversation has been outstanding and really very invigorating - not depressing at all. The fact is that we have a ot of issues in common at our age and Thoughtful Aging is a very supportive place to discuss them.

And......Carol, we go all the way back to kindergarten at Bryn Mawr.

Yes Steve I will share photo. Mark, prom was fun because I still love to dress up. However, Steve and I made the date before he and his old girlfriend got back together. Always a gentleman, he kept the date with me. She came with her cousin and dogged us all evening.

Oops - I accidently deleted the question I asked you but I appreciate the answer. I've never been to a prom in my life (not entirely by choice) and I only know what they look like in the movies.

Hello Mark, I remember you very well. You were always an activist. Still remember when you were going to tell Mrs. Kincheloe something at Mc Cormick Place & it did't happen. I then remember that during one of our reunions you were broadcast on TV regarding fathers rights? It will be interesting to see you. @ our 50th high school reunion! Peggy Brunner -Thurman

Peggy - I remember you as well. Frankly it's hard to forget someone so cute. Your life sounds really interesting and filled with successes with your family and your career. Yes, I was born into a politically active family (something fairly rare in South Shore) and I became active in the civil rights and peace movements in my youth. Then I transfered my energy to help people out of the political realm and into the social service realm. You remember correctly my involvements (for 30 years) supporting all kings of fathers - new and expectant fathers, divorced and separated fathers, step fathers, foster care and adoptive fathers, etc. Now that I'm a grandfather I transfered most of my paternal energy into directly caring for the grandkids. I still think politically but have lost the zeal to go out and demonstrate (it hurts my arthritic knees and hips too much). So about the most I do is post liberal political things on facebook.

It will be a pleasure to see you again in August.

Mark

Mark, Once an activist, always an activist at heart! I have lived in Arkanasa since 1976 and served as their elected representative for close to 20 yrs. know the Clintons very well from the neighborhood and a couple of close friends. Even though I am a fiscal conservative I have always been a social liberal. What I found so very interesting was that the more rural the people were the more they campaigned for me. Here I was a FEMALE from the north and have that distinctive South Shore accent yet they preferred me over "home grown" male opponents. Certainly found my place in life! I still get calls to help people deal with their problems, many are from my husband's friends & family. Who would have ever thunk?? I am really getting eager about this reunion......

Peggy - When you say you served as an elected representative what legislative body are you referring to? The state legislature or in the House of Representatives? Either way I will find it fascinating to talk to you. Though I was involved in political action for awhile I've never actually talked to an elected official for more than a few minutes when I was giving a spiel on funding for childcare or whatever. Though I've always been on the outside of politcs I admire the skill involved with the process of negotiating to develop the best policies and legislation possible. It will be really interesting to talk to you. And as a fiscal conservative liberal on social issues I can see you working for your old neighbor Hillary. What fun that campaign is going to be. See you soon. Mark

I was wondering who is going to the pre-reunion social event in the Renaissance bar area Friday night, August 28. My wife and I are not sure if we're going yet. Also, if anyone wants to try my famous cheese pancakes at a brunch at our house in Oak Park on Saturday, late morning, on the 29th. Let me know. Though it's a bit of a ride from the Renaissance it's all expressways and you could use some of your time here to look at a great collection of Frank Lloyd Wright homes nearby. Let me know on this web page or at 708-524-8196 if you're interested.

I too want to add my thanks to all those who had a hand in the reunion and to all those who showed up.   I'm very thankful to have been lucky enough to have been born exactly when and where I was. That's something I try not to take for granted. All the faces, names and memories  from the reunion simply makes me even more thankful.

To everyone in attendance at the 50th South Shore High School Reunion:
Words can't describe the incredibly wonderful time I had & wish to thank all the former classmates that made this event possible.
I toured the old neigbourhood which included the location of my dad's "Segal's" restaurant at 83rd & Jeffery, my home at 8110 Luella, Horace Mann Elementry, S.S. High School, and was also great to see all the beautiful homes we all occupied in South Shore. It was so suprising to see how well kept these home were, and that the residences & streets seemed larger in my memory.
Wishing everyone the best, & when in Miami Beach feel free to contact me at : 305-962-0234                            2001 Meridian Avenue #107, M.B.
