It has been 20 years now since Edys, my good friend since 4th grade at Bradwell, passed away at age 46, leaving her husband Chester Matonik and 4 year old son, Sam. She suffered from primary pulmonary hypertension, for which she underwent a successful lung transplant at University Hospital in St. Louis. A couple of years later, an infection took over leading to her death.  It was heartbreaking.   Edys graduated from Shimer College in Illinois and later obtained a PhD in biology at the University of Chicago.  She was very proud of that achievement, and the certificate is buried with her.  Edys was so bright, funny and talented.  You may remember her accompanying the mixed chorus and the talent show on the piano.  Her research at U of C was published in Nature Magazine, and you can still find her paper on Google. Edys' son Sam is also super bright, and is just starting a masters program in political economics at NYU.  Her younger sister Carla Gordon  has pursued a successful second career as a cabaret singer in Chicago.  Check her out on Facebook.  So glad that we have this vehicle for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this info on Edys.  Seems we lost another very bright, talented class member way too early. This site is wonderful for this opportunity to remember old friends no longer with us!

Edys and I both played the piano for the Mixed Choir and I remember her as being a warm, caring person with a great sense of humor.  I'm still shocked that she passed away at such an early age.  What a loss.

Edys was so sweet.  What wonderful accomplishments in such a short life.
